Wedding loans: paying for the day without a five-year card balance

The average American wedding now costs more than a year of in-state college tuition, and four in ten couples spend more than they planned. If some of it has to be borrowed, the goal is simple: a fixed cost, a short term and a number both of you chose on purpose.

What weddings cost, and when the money is due

The Knot's 2026 Real Weddings Study put the national average at $34,200 for the ceremony and reception, with a median of $24,000; averages are pulled up by expensive metros (New York and New Jersey weddings run well above $50,000) while many couples spend far less. The average guest list was 117 people at about $292 per guest, which means the fastest way to cut the total is still the guest list.

The venue and the final catering balance land in the last month; that is the gap most couples finance.

The financing problem is less the total than the timing. Vendors typically require a 25%–50% deposit at booking, a year or more out, and the balance 2–4 weeks before the date, while gifts arrive after. The venue (average $12,900), catering and photography all land in the same final month. Couples who have saved steadily often still face a short-term gap of $5,000–$15,000 in that window, and that gap, not the whole wedding, is what a loan should cover.

Ways to pay for a wedding, compared

Savings and contributions

Cost $0

Still the main source: couples pay roughly half themselves and parents contribute much of the rest. A dedicated high-yield savings account at 3.5%–4% in 2026 earns real money on deposits held a year.

Fits: everything you can cover; the financing question is only about the remainder.

Personal loan

APR ≈ 12% at 700 FICO · fixed

Lump sum timed for the final-balance month, repaid over 2–5 years. No collateral, funding in days, no surprise rate changes. Joint applications available at several lenders.

Fits: a gap of $5,000+ that will take more than a year to repay.

0% intro purchase card

Promo 0% for 12 – 21 mo · then 20%+

Good for deposits and purchases with purchase protection and rewards. Workable if the balance will be gone before the promotion ends, which post-wedding gifts can help with.

Fits: a few thousand dollars with a firm payoff plan and good credit.

Regular credit card balance

APR 22.36% average

The most common and most expensive choice. Minimum payments stretch a wedding balance over years; $15,000 at 22.36% paying $400 a month takes 65 months and costs about $11,000 in interest.

Fits: only what you will pay off at the next statement.

Vendor payment plans and BNPL

Typical 0% – 30%

Some venues and planners offer installment plans; buy-now-pay-later services cover dresses, rings and travel. Read the APR; longer BNPL plans are often ordinary high-rate loans.

Fits: individual purchases where the plan is interest-free.

Home equity or 401(k)

HELOC 7.36% · 401(k) loan prime + 1–2%

Cheaper rates, but a HELOC puts your home behind a party and a 401(k) loan comes due if you change jobs. Most planners and advisors steer couples away from both for a discretionary expense.

Fits: rarely; only for homeowners who would use the line anyway.

$15,000 gap, three ways

A couple has saved $20,000 toward a $35,000 wedding and faces $15,000 of final balances due in the last month. Good credit; October 2026 rates; our amortization math.

Personal loan · 12.5% · 36 mo$502 / mo$3,065 total interest · paid off in 3 years
Personal loan · 12.5% · 60 mo$337 / mo$5,248 total interest · lower payment, 71% more interest
Credit card · 22.36% · $400 / mo65 months≈ $10,996 total interest · the balance outlives most car loans

The three-year loan costs about $7,900 less than carrying the same balance on a card at a similar payment, and ends two and a half years sooner. If wedding gifts average even a few thousand dollars, applying them to the loan in month one shortens it further; there is no prepayment penalty at any major lender.

How to size a wedding loan

  1. Build the budget from the guest countGuests drive catering, venue size, rentals and stationery. At about $292 per guest on average, 20 fewer guests is roughly $6,000, which is more than most couples borrow.
  2. Map every payment to a dateList deposits and balances by due date. The loan should cover only the months where cash on hand falls short, which is usually the final 30 days.
  3. Subtract savings you will have by then, and confirmed contributionsCount only money that is in an account or firmly promised. Do not count gifts; apply them after the fact to prepay the loan.
  4. Add a 10% contingency and nothing more41% of couples go over budget, mostly on final guest counts, overtime and last-minute additions. A small buffer prevents a card balance on top of the loan.
  5. Choose the term by the payment you would still be comfortable with next yearThree years or less is the usual recommendation; a 36-month loan is typically priced 2–4 points below a 60-month loan and costs far less interest.
  6. Pre-qualify 4–6 weeks before the first big balance is dueSoft inquiries only. Fund the loan a week before the final payments so you are not paying interest on money that sits idle for months.

Five rules couples should agree on first

  • Both partners see the numberDecide the maximum you will borrow together, in writing, before the venue tour. The loan is the first joint financial decision of the marriage.
  • The payment fits after the wedding, not beforeTest it against next year's budget, including rent or mortgage plans, not this year's.
  • Protect a home purchaseIf a mortgage is within two years, a $500 monthly loan payment can reduce what you qualify for by tens of thousands of dollars. Keep it small or sequence the two.
  • One source of borrowingA loan plus two cards plus BNPL is how budgets slip. Put all borrowed money through one fixed-term loan you can see.
  • Gifts go to the loanDecide now that cash gifts prepay the principal. On the three-year example, $5,000 applied in month one cuts roughly $1,700 of interest and about a year off the term.

Wedding loan questions

What is a wedding loan?

An unsecured personal loan used to pay wedding costs. Lenders do not offer a special product; "wedding loan" is marketing for the same fixed-rate installment loan used for any purpose, typically $1,000–$50,000 over two to seven years at 6%–36% APR depending on credit. A few lenders exclude certain purposes, but weddings are universally allowed.

Is it a bad idea to take a loan for a wedding?

It is a trade-off, not a rule. A loan has a known cost and a fixed end date, which makes it a far better tool than a credit card balance for the same spending. The risk is starting a marriage with a payment that strains the first years; financial stress is a leading source of marital conflict in surveys. Borrow for the gap after savings and family contributions, keep the term at or under three years, and make sure both partners agree on the number.

How much do couples borrow for weddings?

Surveys suggest roughly a third of couples use credit cards for some wedding costs (31% in Zola's 2026 survey) and a smaller share, typically under 15%, take a personal loan. Among those who borrow, amounts of $5,000–$20,000 are most common, covering venue deposits and the final balance due in the weeks before the wedding.

Should I use a credit card instead?

For deposits and purchases you can pay off within a month, yes: cards offer purchase protection and rewards. A 0% purchase promotion (12–21 months) is also reasonable for a few thousand dollars if you will clear it before the rate reverts. For a balance that will take years to repay, a personal loan at roughly 12% beats a card at 22.36% by thousands of dollars.

Can we apply together?

Yes, at lenders that accept joint applications (Happen Bank, Upgrade, Prosper, PenFed, many credit unions). Combining incomes raises the approvable amount and the loan is priced largely on the stronger credit profile. Both applicants are equally liable, and the account appears on both credit reports, which matters if you later apply for a mortgage together.

Will a wedding loan affect buying a house?

The payment counts in your debt-to-income ratio for a mortgage, and a new account briefly lowers scores. A $15,000 loan at 12.5% over 36 months adds a $502 monthly obligation, which at a 43% DTI limit reduces mortgage-qualifying capacity by roughly $75,000–$85,000 of loan amount at 2026 rates. If a home purchase is within two years, keep the loan small and the term short, or delay one of the two.
